Further goals of the pact include improving the effectiveness of Poland’s
national and regional contact points, and the assessment of research
proposals by national experts before final submission to Horizon 2020.
Organisations that have signed the pact include the Faculty of
Management of Warsaw University of Technology, Pozna´n University of
Economics, and the University of Lower Silesia in Wrocław.
Commenting, Kolarska-Bobi´nska said: “It is clear that universities,
research units and departments have not treated the matter casually but
have become deeply involved in actions to obtain EU funds. This is a
positive sign for the future, and I do believe that Polish science will take
advantage of the opportunities offered within Horizon 2020. We are well
prepared for this competition.”
Commenting on the achievements made,
Kolarska-Bobi´nska said: “I am delighted with this
news. The rates of participation and success in
competitions used to be rather low for us. This
is the best way not only to internationalise Polish
science but also to obtain new funds and
participate in new initiatives.
“In June, I proposed that the researchers sign
the ‘Pact for Horizon 2020’. The ministry,
universities and their branches, as well as
scientific and research institutes, have
undertaken to take actions to encourage
initiatives and increase the effectiveness of our
researchers in competitions for prestigious
European grants. Today, we may enjoy the first
effects of these efforts.”
New pact
Announced in 2014, the Pact for Horizon 2020
aims to motivate Polish scholars to apply for
funds under the framework programme. Over
340 research institutions have now signed the
pact, which sees universities and research
institutes commit to increased participation in
Horizon 2020 and to developing an
infrastructure to support scientists who apply
for funding. In addition, institutions must take
into account Horizon 2020-related activity
when evaluating and promoting research staff.
