T
he Institute of Plant Genetics of the Polish Academy of
Sciences (IPG PAS), a public sector research institute, is
an important research centre for genetic and molecular
studies of various crop plants located in Poznan, the capital of the
Wielkopolska region and the leading agricultural region in Poland.
IPG PAS is, apart from agricultural universities, the only research
institute in Poland that focuses on plant genetics, agrobiology and
related topics.
Its research area covers integrative plant biology, genetics,
cytogenetics, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, biotechnology,
in vitro
cultures, plant resistance to stresses as well as biometry
and bioinformatics in crops and model plants. Basic and applied
research concerns mainly cereals, legumes, grasses, oilseed rape
and potato. In December 2012 the process of introducing HR
strategy was initiated, resulting in the HR Excellence in Research
logo being awarded to the institute in January 2014. Before the
creation of the
Department of Integrative Plant Biology,
the
research at IPG PAS was conducted in five departments:

Department of Environmental Stress Biology
conducts
research on mechanisms of plant adaptation to changing
environmental conditions during the vegetative and generative
phase of growth. The main aim of the studies is to understand
the molecular and physiological basis of plant adaptation
mechanisms to low temperature and water scarcity;
n
Department of Biometry and Bioinformatics
concentrates on
statistical, informatics and bioinformatic methods applicable in
the analysis and integration of results of biological
experiments, with special attention to experiments performed
in genetics, genomics and plant breeding, and research on
database structures and tools for storage and processing of
plant biology data;
n
Department of Biotechnology
takes advantage of plant
biotechnology methods, including DNA recombination,
transformation and analyses of transgenic plants,
in vitro
cultures, molecular and protein markers, as well as rheological
analyses. Research comprises production of
biopharmaceuticals in plants, molecular basics of phenotypic
variation of agronomic traits in wheat and barley, technological
and rheological parameters of grain quality, and biomass of
Miscanthus
spp;

Department of Pathogen Genetics and Plant Resistance
performs research on various plant-pathogen interactions.
