facilitate communication between stakeholders

and to improve security in port areas.

All the signals point to massive increases in the

volumes of waterborne transport in future, and

it is understood that by cultivating these

capabilities and the ability of the sector to

sustainably maintain and support fleets, future

demands can be met.

Ship design, construction and maintenance

concern innovative ship concepts, new design

tools, the use of new materials and reduction

in lifecycle costs, and more efficient inspection

methods continue to be embraced by the

sector, offering great potential in the

construction and maintenance of ships.

Over recent years a number of European

projects have moved to support innovation in

the maritime sector, a number of which are

listed below:

Adaptive and Smart Materials and

Structures for More Efficient Vessels

(ADAM4EVE) 2013-2015 is focusing on

developing and assessing applications for

adaptive materials and structures in the

shipbuilding industry;

n

Breakthrough in European Ship and

Shipbuilding Technologies (BESST) 2009-

2013 is designing ships with the objective

of increasing the competitiveness of

shipbuilding in Europe by decreasing

lifecycle cost, drastically reducing

environmental impact and improving safety;

n

Human Factors in Risk-Based Ship Design

Methodology (FAROS) 2012-2015 is

integrating the human element into the ship

safety framework and delivering ship

concepts (ro-pax and tanker) that are safe,

economic and green. It is expected that the

uropean shipyards and the maintenance and equipment industry

are intrinsically linked to ensuring an effective maritime sector

that is contributing to European growth. Of course, the

Commission’s push under the so-called ‘Blue Growth’ agenda is helping

to bolster shipyards and the marine maintenance sector. The Commission

is clear that the shipbuilding industry is dynamic and competitive in the

EU’s home market and around the world. With around 150 large

shipyards in Europe, around 40 are active in the global market for large

sea-going commercial vessels. Around 120,000 people are employed

directly by shipyards, and with Europe holding a market share of around

15% of the value of civilian ships produced annually, the importance of

the sector is clear.

Maritime research

EU research priorities within maritime transport are focused on innovative

techniques to respond to current and future EU rules on clean shipping.

With the EU pressuring the industry to reduce emissions, sulphur content

of fuel and the adoption of alternative fuels, research funding is targeted

accordingly. Critical research funding on ship design, construction and

maintenance is channelled, while projects dealing with safety and

security in maritime transport are pushed. In the domain of inland

waterway transportation, there are work programmes being explored as

the potential of the sector increases. The attention falls upon the

modernisation of vessels, waste management, creation of ‘green

corridors’ and the effects of climate change. Other topics for attention

include co-operation and information exchange between stakeholders

via ICT systems, and studies are being simulated on the use of this

transport mode. It is expected that interest will continue to mount toward

the shifting of haulage from European roads onto waterways.

Meanwhile, new concepts over vessels and loading units and the

implementation and operation of intermodal links are further advanced

by the backing of new research. Short sea shipping and ‘motorways of

the sea’ concepts continue to be embraced. Here, the potential of

liquefied natural gas (LNG) is being explored in order to reduce

environmental impact. ICT research agendas also focus on improving

navigation systems, promoting data exchange between ports and

vessels, improving logistic chains and the issue of short sea shipping.

Ports and port operations are also the subject of research. Brussels has

focused on the environmental impact of ports, energy management and

air quality in port areas. ICT systems research is being carried out to
