Solar SRA

The ETP benefits from an SRA for photo-

voltaics and provides ‘recommendations for

implementation’ as well as helping to ‘ensure

that Europe maintains industrial leadership’.

The platform ultimately seeks to ‘develop a

strategy and corresponding implementation

plan for education, research and technology

development, innovation and market deployment

of photovoltaic solar energy’.

The platform’s SRA presents the common view

of PV experts, from both industry and

academia, on research and development

priorities to achieve cost reduction, efficiency

increase, enhanced system performance,

integration, sustainability and other targets for

2020 and beyond. According to the ETP, large

scale integration of PV into the grids is a priority

for achieving the up to 12% of European

electricity demand by 2020, as foreseen in

the Implementation Plan of the Solar Europe

Industry Initiative.

The second edition of the European PVTP’s SRA

was launched in 2011 at the 26th European PV

Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition in

Hamburg, Germany. It was decided to update

the SRA in recognition of ‘the rapid

development of the market’ as well as the

‘increased ambition for the contribution of

photovoltaics in the near to medium term’. This

revision was completed with the backdrop of

‘the adoption of binding 2020 renewable

energy targets in Europe’, in addition to ‘the

establishment of the Solar Europe Industry

Initiative as part of Europe’s Strategic Energy

Technology Plan’. The updated SRA aims to

‘address the rapid technological developments

required for these new challenges and

opportunities’, as well as help to inform

research programmes at national and

supranational level.

In the document setting out the SRA for the

photovoltaic solar energy technology, the ETP

concluded that significant progress had been

made since the publication of the first SRA in

2007. The platform said: ‘This second edition

of the SRA of the European Photovoltaic

Technology Platform has updated the cost and

performance targets of this rapidly growing

technology. This reflects the progress in the

PV market in recent years and the increased

ambition for the contribution of PV to Europe’s

policies and objectives. Members of the NANOfutures steering committee

include EUMAT, MANUFUTURE and SusChem.

The cross-cutting nature of NANOfutures is reflected in the horizontal

working groups of the platform. The groupings are organised under three

main topic areas, namely technology, regulation and standards, and

innovation. The aim of the working groups is to present recommendations

for strategic actions under each of these topic areas.

In February, NANOfutures announced the creation of the Critical Raw

Materials (CRM) Working Group. This working group aims to fulfil two

major needs, namely ‘the creation of a collaborative network of

expertise to develop new materials, products and technologies based

on nanotechnology by connecting fundamental and applied research

with the aim of substituting or reducing the need of CRMs in strategic

EU industrial value chains’. In addition, the working group also helps

‘to extend the knowledge and technology transfer within

NANOfutures community to scientists, engineers, technologists, and

European industry’.

Photovoltaics ETP

The European Photovoltaic Technology Platform (European PVTP) is

another established ETP and is recognised as an ‘independent and

objective body’ which seeks to be a ‘point of reference for key decision

and policy makers’. According to the ETP, the platform brings together

key actors across different sectors which ‘share a long term European

vision for photovoltaics’.

There are four major objectives of the ETP, cutting across the areas of

competitiveness, research and industry. The ETP’s goals are: ‘to

contribute to a rapid development of a world class cost competitive

European PV for a sustainable electricity production’; ‘involve

stakeholders in the formulation of research programmes’; ‘ensure strong

links and co-ordination between industry, research and market’; and ‘to

implement the strategic plan’. Like NANOfutures, the European PVTP

has also benefitted from funding under the FP7.
